Founded in 1969 by Estelle Shane Gross, Gross McCleaf Gallery has thrived for over 55 years under successive generations of female leadership, evolving from a New York-style space on Walnut Street to its current vibrant home in Manayunk. The gallery champions contemporary American art, with a strong emphasis on Philadelphia's local and regional talents alongside luminaries like Fairfield Porter and Neil Welliver, fostering an accessible, welcoming atmosphere that demystifies the art world. Under owner-director Rebecca Segall, a PAFA alum and mixed-media artist, it hosts dynamic solo and group shows—such as Peter Van Dyck's spatial explorations or Joe Lozano's surreal mythologies—while collaborating with institutions like Stanek Gallery to illuminate the city's creative pulse. Worth visiting for its free parking, intimate engagement, and role as a resilient cornerstone of Philly's art scene.
