TALISMANS FOR A THEATER OF RESILIENCE
Lisa Alvarado's *Talismans for a Theater of Resilience* transforms the gallery into a liminal theater where rhythm, movement, and history pulse through monumental textiles and immersive installations. Working across painting, textiles, and musical performance, Alvarado channels what she terms “vibrational aesthetics,” drawing from bodily pulses and earthly cycles to forge multi-sensory works that resonate visually and sonically, evoking a surreal space of in-betweenness as a site of generative power.
During her residency at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Alvarado honed sculptural fabric assemblage, screenprinting, and dyeing techniques to realize two colossal hanging tapestries, each exceeding 19 by 10 feet. These compositions layer multi-colored bands against stepped and curved forms, mirroring natural rock strata and the gallery’s circular windows, while translucent mesh and tinted gels filter daylight into shifting projections, attuning the pieces to diurnal and seasonal rhythms. Infused with kinetic sound, they cultivate a meditative realm where light, pattern, and vibration coalesce, functioning as talismans that summon the emblematic unity of the 1965 United Farm Workers flag.
Alvarado’s research bridges personal and collective narratives—her family’s 1930s suppressions and the Chicano civil rights struggles of the 1960s—with geological time, informed by Philadelphia’s mineral collections that archive the land’s cycles of metamorphosis. This weaving of ancestral memory, natural renewal, and communal histories crafts a theater of resistance, where abstraction transcends Western modernism to reclaim ancient global traditions, including Mexican textiles, as vessels for empowerment and endurance. In Alvarado’s broader practice—as a harmonium player with Natural Information Society and creator of free-hanging paintings that double as mobile stage sets—these works extend her Mexican American lens on hybridity, pulsing with the transformative cadences of music, body, and earth.
